Coyotes range across essentially all of Texas, from Panhandle canyon breaks to coastal brush to the edges of major cities, and the more than 12,000 records here concentrate around Caprock Canyons, Matador Wildlife Management Area, and Copper Breaks State Park, where broken grassland and canyon cover give a generalist hunter both prey and denning ground.
Records peak in December and January and dip through summer, with June and July running less than half the winter high. Sparse winter vegetation and cooler daytime temperatures likely make coyotes easier to spot and track, especially against snow or frost in the Panhandle, rather than any real seasonal change in how many are out there. NatureServe rates the species secure both statewide and across its full North American range.
