Douglas's squirrel is the sharp-voiced tree squirrel of Pacific conifer forests, often heard scolding before it is seen. A dusky back, orange belly, and full tail suit a small animal that spends much of its life harvesting and defending cone crops. National records hug the Pacific states and barely reach western Nevada, following cool forests rather than political borders.

A conifer specialist with a loud voice

This compact tree squirrel has a dark gray-brown back and a warm orange or buff underside. Its tail is bushy but not huge. Loud rattles and chattering calls carry through forest cover. It can resemble a red squirrel, but the two occupy different western regions and show differences in belly color and seasonal coat.

Where cone-bearing forests continue

Douglas’s squirrels live from California through Oregon and Washington in forests dominated by fir, pine, spruce, and related trees. Nevada records sit at the forested edge of that range. Reports cluster along trails and settled mountain corridors, so dense observations can reflect access as much as squirrel numbers.

Cone scales on the forest floor

The squirrel cuts cones, removes their scales, and stores food in a central pile called a midden. Fungi, seeds, buds, and occasional animal foods broaden the diet. It doesn’t wander randomly when cones are scarce. A defended store and remembered feeding sites help it survive seasons when fresh food is limited.

Forest change reaches the midden

Females raise young in tree nests or sheltered cavities. Mature forest supplies cones, cover, and nest sites, while openings can add feeding opportunities. Severe fire and broad forest removal erase those resources at once. The species remains secure overall, but local squirrels depend on connected conifer stands and reliable cone-producing trees.
