The biggest shrew on the coast
Shrews are tiny by definition, but the fog shrew tops the Pacific coast’s shrew list for size. It’s still a small animal overall, built low and compact for pushing through damp leaf litter rather than open ground. It carries the pointed snout and small eyes typical of the whole shrew family.
Damp forest, not dry ground
The fog shrew depends on consistently moist habitat: coniferous forest, streamside cover, wetland edges, and chaparral where fog and rain keep the ground from drying out. Oregon carries the larger share of records, with a smaller population confirmed in northern California. That matches a range tracking the fog-belt forests running along the coast more than any inland boundary. Elevation records run from near sea level up past 4,900 feet, though the middle of that range, roughly 1,000 to 2,000 feet, holds the bulk of sightings. Records climb sharply in fall, especially October, likely reflecting both a real seasonal pattern and when field surveys tend to run in this region.
A hunter of the leaf litter
Nearly its whole diet is invertebrates, supplemented by scavenged food when the opportunity arises. It hunts around the clock, active by day and night in short bursts. Shrews keep up that pace because their tiny bodies burn energy too fast to coast through long periods of rest. That constant foraging need is also why damp habitat matters so much. Dry leaf litter holds far fewer of the invertebrates a shrew this size depends on to keep from starving between meals.
A fast life, a short one
A fog shrew reaches breeding condition within about a year, carries young for roughly three weeks, and can raise nearly five young in a litter, sometimes twice in a season. Few live past two years in the wild. That’s a lifespan typical of small, high-metabolism shrews, animals that live fast and rarely make it to a second winter.
Conservation
The IUCN lists the fog shrew as Least Concern. Its range is narrow, tied to the fog belt and wet forests of the Pacific Northwest. No significant decline has been documented, though, and it remains a normal, if rarely seen, part of that forest floor community.
