Great Basin pocket mice show up in Idaho more than almost any other small mammal in this dataset, 541 records concentrated near the Deer Flat and Camas national wildlife refuges and along the Snake River corridor, sagebrush and shrub-steppe ground that fits this species’ core Great Basin habitat.

Reports jump sharply in May, with 194 of the 541 records, then ease through summer with a smaller secondary bump in September. That spring surge lines up with when this pocket mouse first breaks its winter torpor and starts foraging again after months sealed underground living off cached seed, not a population boom, just a return to visibility.

NatureServe ranks the species S5, Secure, in Idaho, the strongest status of any Great Basin rodent covered here, and it’s native throughout its mapped range. With most Idaho records still coming from GBIF rather than casual iNaturalist photos, sightings likely trace back to trapping surveys more than backyard observation.
