The long-eared chipmunk is a California mountain chipmunk named for ears that rise noticeably above its striped head. It moves through conifer forest, chaparral, logs, and rocky cover from the Sierra Nevada into a small part of western Nevada. The record pattern is narrow and mountainous, and it should not be mistaken for evidence that every striped chipmunk nearby belongs to this species.

The ears help, but they aren’t enough

Prominent ears and crisp light-and-dark stripes give this chipmunk its name. A long tail follows as it runs or climbs. Western chipmunks are a difficult group, and coat colors can change with wear. Location, voice, and several physical details offer a safer identification than one feature alone.

Forest edges west of the desert

The species favors conifer woods, brushy slopes, fallen logs, and rock piles in California’s mountains. A small extension reaches western Nevada. Records are most frequent near roads, trails, and recreation areas because people search there. That pattern reflects observer access as well as chipmunk activity.

A cheek-pouch harvest

Seeds, berries, fungi, and insects make up a flexible diet. The chipmunk gathers food by day and carries small items in cheek pouches. Logs, rocks, and shrubs provide quick escape cover. Winter is spent in a burrow, where stored food helps bridge periods when snow closes the forest floor.

A short mountain breeding season

Breeding follows winter dormancy, and females raise young during the warmer months. Timing must fit snowmelt and food growth. Fire can create feeding openings but also removes shelter when it burns too broadly. The species remains secure overall, though its limited range makes major forest changes locally important.
