Most people in the wet mountain meadows of the Southwest’s high country never see a Mogollon vole alive. Its architecture gives the animal away. A narrow, roofed runway runs through standing grass and connects one sedge clump to the next. Cropped stems, clipped vegetation, and fresh round droppings mark the route. The vole itself is a stocky, short-tailed rodent scarcely longer than a finger. Outside a live trap or lucky glance under lifted grass, the runway is usually the only evidence it leaves.
The runway is the real field mark
A Mogollon vole is compact and rounded, gray-brown above and only slightly paler below. Its small eyes and ears are mostly buried in dense fur. Adults run 4 to 5 inches long. They weigh 1 to 1.75 ounces, with a tail under half the body’s length. That build suits tunneling through cover, not climbing or leaping. Short legs and a blunt face suit an animal that spends nearly its entire life under grass.
The runway itself is often more diagnostic than the animal. Look for narrow cropped paths at the base of grass clumps, piles of green-clipped stems along the route, small fresh droppings, and burrow openings tucked under flat rocks or dense sedge. A brush mouse sharing the same meadow has bulging dark eyes, prominent ears, and a tail as long as its body. A western harvest mouse is slimmer still, with grooved front teeth and an even longer tail. Neither builds a surface runway system. A fulvous pocket gopher digs entirely below ground and announces itself with a mounded soil pile and prominent yellow incisors, not a grass tunnel.
New Mexico’s mountains hold most of the record
Documented sightings run heavily toward New Mexico, which accounts for roughly nine in every ten of the 467 US occurrence records logged since 2000, with lighter representation in Arizona, Colorado, and the Guadalupe Mountains of Texas. The core of that record traces the Sacramento Mountains, the Mogollon Mountains, and the Black Range, extending into the Mogollon Rim country and the White Mountains and San Francisco Peaks of Arizona, wherever moist grass and sedge persist at elevation.
Elevation tells a similarly narrow story: documented records run from about 5,200 to 10,600 feet, with a median near 8,500 feet, squarely inside the mixed-conifer and ponderosa pine belt. Within that belt the species needs a specific microhabitat, not just altitude: dense grass and sedge cover overhead, enough soil moisture to keep vegetation green through summer, and a light enough tree canopy to let grass grow thick at ground level. Where a meadow dries out or closes in under encroaching conifer, the vole disappears along with the grass.
One species, or a subspecies of the Mexican vole?
Taxonomists have gone back and forth on this animal’s rank for decades. GBIF and the Catalogue of Life both carry Microtus mogollonensis as an accepted species, and regional field guides have long described it that way. A broader school of thought, reflected in how Wikipedia and several museum checklists currently classify the animal, folds these Southwestern populations into Microtus mexicanus, the Mexican vole, as one of several geographic subspecies rather than a distinct species. The disagreement turns on how much genetic and morphological separation counts as species-level, not on the animal itself: the meadow-restricted, runway-building vole in Arizona and New Mexico’s high country is the same either way.
The Hualapai population’s brush with delisting
One isolated population carries its own conservation history. The Hualapai Mexican vole, once classified as its own subspecies restricted to a handful of springs and seeps in the Hualapai Mountains and nearby ranges of northwestern Arizona, was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service delisted it in 2017 after a taxonomic review folded the population back into the wider Mexican vole complex and reassessed its status. The springs themselves remain a fragile setting regardless of the paperwork: small patches of green vegetation fed by mountain seeps, surrounded by otherwise arid terrain, holding a population with essentially nowhere else to go if the water fails.
Boom years, bust years
Diet centers on grasses, supplemented by the roots of shrubs and trees. Green stems and leaves dominate through the growing season; in winter the vole shifts to dormant grass tussocks, harvested seed heads, and bark stripped from small woody shoots, often working under snow through the same tunnels it uses in summer. It doesn’t hibernate.
Breeding runs through the warm months, with gestation of roughly three weeks and litters of two to five pups, averaging about two and a half. A female can produce several litters in a single season, and young reach breeding age within months of birth, a reproductive pace that most wild Mogollon voles never live long enough to fully exploit: few survive more than a single year. That short lifespan paired with rapid, continuous breeding drives the boom-and-bust population swings typical of the genus, with numbers climbing fast after a wet monsoon and mild winter, then crashing after a dry, cold one. Long-tailed weasels, hawks, owls, coyotes, bobcats, and several snake species all draw on vole numbers as a food source, and weasel breeding success in particular tracks vole abundance from year to year.
Conservation outlook
The species carries a Least Concern rating overall, and populations across its range appear stable in suitable habitat. The main long-term risks are habitat-based rather than direct. They include loss of moist meadow and streamside sedge cover to overgrazing and conifer growth after decades of fire suppression. Drying springs and seeps also threaten isolated populations like the one in the Hualapai Mountains. The vole depends on a narrow band of moisture and elevation. Changing monsoon timing or winter snow may therefore affect it before broader forest changes become clear.
