A traveler of connected water

An otter’s home is a drainage rather than a den. A single animal may work miles of river, moving between ponds, marshes, and tributaries wherever fish, crayfish, and frogs are easiest to catch. Connecticut’s records follow that logic, turning up at Mansfield Hollow Wildlife Management Area, Peoples State Forest, and Bennett’s Pond State Park, and in the tidal creeks and coves of coastal parks like Hammonasset Beach State Park and Bluff Point State Park. Slides down muddy banks and tracks at bridge crossings often mark a stretch of river long before the otter itself appears.

Most visible in winter

Otters neither hibernate nor migrate, and Connecticut’s record is at its strongest in December, January, and March. Cold water barely slows an animal insulated by dense, oiled fur, but ice and snow change the observer’s odds, concentrating otters at open water and signing their routes with tracks and slides. The quieter summer counts reflect thick cover and an elusive animal rather than any seasonal absence.
