A stripe pattern unique to every individual
No two plains zebras carry identical markings. The exact arrangement of black and white stripes across the body, from broad bands on the flanks to fine, needle-thin lines toward the legs, is unique to each animal, letting researchers identify specific individuals through photographs alone. Scientists still debate exactly why the stripes exist at all. Leading explanations range from confusing biting flies to disrupting a predator’s ability to pick out one animal from a moving herd, but the pattern’s use as an identification tool is beyond dispute.
Grazing under constant watch, mixed in a moving alarm system
Plains zebras live in tight family groups, usually a stallion with several mares and their young, that often merge into much larger herds when grazing or migrating. They graze tough, fibrous grasses that many other grazers can’t digest efficiently, often moving into an area first and clearing coarse growth that leaves finer grass behind for antelope that follow. Herds regularly mix with wildebeest and other grazers on the move, gaining extra eyes and ears against predators in exchange for sharing the best grazing ground.

No wild population, wherever the US records point
Plains zebras range naturally across grasslands and open woodland in eastern and southern Africa, from Kenya down through South Africa. None of that range extends anywhere near North America. Every US record here, concentrated in Texas and California, traces exotic-game ranches, wildlife parks, and occasional escapes rather than a wild population establishing itself. A sighting confirms an animal is loose, not that the species has taken hold in the wild.

Why the trend still cuts against a numerous species
The IUCN lists the plains zebra as Near Threatened, a step above its historical standing despite the species still being the most numerous zebra in Africa by a wide margin. Population declines in parts of its range, driven by hunting, fencing that blocks migration routes, and competition with livestock for grazing, pushed the assessment in that direction even though total numbers remain substantial elsewhere. That gap between still common in places and trending downward overall is exactly the kind of nuance a single global status label can obscure.
