A mouse adapted to salt water
Most rodents can’t survive on salt water, but the salt marsh harvest mouse can drink it when fresh water isn’t available, an adaptation almost unheard of among mice. It’s a small, reddish-brown mouse with a pale belly, built to move through dense pickleweed and cordgrass without ever needing to leave marsh cover. That tolerance for salt is what lets it hold territory other small mammals can’t use. It’s also an agile climber, scaling pickleweed stems to escape rising tides rather than fleeing across open mud where predators like herons and harriers could spot it easily.
Confined to San Francisco Bay’s remaining marshes
Every confirmed record comes from California, and the species’ real range is even narrower: tidal salt marsh ringing San Francisco Bay, much of it now fragmented by development, diking, and fill. Elevation records sit almost entirely at or just above sea level, exactly where tidal marsh vegetation grows. Confirmed sightings are few, a reflection of how much marsh habitat has disappeared and how secretive the mouse stays within what’s left.
A close relative from the Midwest
Genetic studies show this species is most closely related to the plains harvest mouse, a mouse of Midwestern prairie far from any tidal marsh. That relationship suggests an ancestor once ranged more broadly before California’s coastal marshes isolated this population and pushed it toward a very different, salt-tolerant way of life.
Diet, reproduction, and an urgent conservation status
The salt marsh harvest mouse feeds mainly on seeds and the leaves of marsh plants like pickleweed, rarely straying from dense cover to forage. A female can raise a litter of roughly four young, and individuals typically live a few years at most. The IUCN lists the species as Endangered, and ongoing loss of San Francisco Bay wetlands to development and rising sea levels remains the central threat to its survival. Restoration projects around the bay now aim to reconnect fragmented marsh patches, giving isolated populations a better chance of persisting long term.
