Fur built for warmth, not blubber
Sea otters carry the densest fur of any animal, thick enough to trap a layer of air against the skin for insulation, since they don’t carry the heavy blubber most marine mammals rely on. That dependence on fur means otters spend much of the day grooming, and it also made them the single most valuable target of the North Pacific fur trade. They’re the heaviest member of the weasel family, yet still one of the smallest marine mammals.

A coastal range rebuilt after near extinction
Fur hunters pushed sea otters to the brink of extinction by the early 1900s, leaving only a handful of scattered survivors along the Pacific coast. Protected populations have since recolonized much of their former range, and today records concentrate heavily in California and Alaska, with smaller numbers in Oregon and Washington. Nearly every sighting comes from at or near sea level, in the kelp forests and rocky shallows just offshore. Records climb through summer, when calm weather makes otters easier to spot from shore as they groom and forage.
A keystone predator of the kelp forest
Sea otters eat sea urchins, crabs, clams, and octopus, often floating on their backs to crack open a shell with a rock balanced on their chest, a rare example of tool use in a marine mammal. By keeping urchin numbers in check, otters protect kelp forests that urchins would otherwise strip bare, so the otter’s absence from a stretch of coast doesn’t stay invisible for long. Great white sharks and orcas both prey on otters, and shark bites are now a leading cause of death in parts of California.
Slow reproduction and a fragile recovery
A female sea otter usually raises just one pup roughly every fourteen months, one of the slowest reproductive rates of any marine mammal, which makes population recovery slow even where habitat is healthy. Individuals can live nearly three decades. The IUCN currently lists the species as Endangered, reflecting how vulnerable a slow-breeding, near-shore species remains to oil spills, disease, and shifting predator pressure even a century after the fur trade nearly wiped it out.
