You will probably never see the animal itself. What you see are the signs: raised ridges snaking across a lawn, small volcanoes of soil pushed up overnight, a flowerbed that seems to breathe. The southern broad-footed mole lives nearly its whole life underground in southern California, and it meets the surface world mainly through the tunnels it leaves behind. Until recently it wasn’t even treated as a full species. A 2021 revision split it from its northern relative, and the new name is still catching on.
A new name for a familiar digger
For a century, every broad-footed mole in California was filed as one species. A 2021 revision of the genus found enough anatomical and genetic divergence to split it in two, with the southern broad-footed mole taking the southern half of the range. The split explains an oddity in the records. Occurrences under this name turn up as far afield as Washington, Oregon, and Nevada, but that trail is mostly paperwork from the years before the split. The verified range is compact: California from about San Luis Obispo and the southern Sierra Nevada south to the border, continuing down the Peninsular Ranges into northern Baja California. Where the two broad-footed moles share ground, in parts of the southern Sierra and northern Santa Barbara County, the southern species keeps to the lower elevations.
Built like a shovel, dressed in velvet
A mole in the hand is unmistakable: a compact cylinder of slate-gray fur with no visible eyes, no external ears, a short fleshy tail, and front feet rotated outward like paddles. In this species those forefeet are especially broad, and the snout is short and wide. Adults run from about fourteen to seventeen centimeters long. The coat lies flat in any direction, a velvet that lets the animal reverse through tight tunnels without resistance.
Among western moles, the details matter. The coast mole is slimmer, with a longer, narrower snout. Townsend’s mole is substantially larger and heavier, with massive front paws. And against the northern broad-footed mole, this is the smaller animal, with a proportionally longer, wider skull.
Soils, not scenery
Ask where this mole lives and the honest answer is wherever the digging is good. It needs moist, friable soil it can work: annual and perennial grassland, pasture, valley and foothill streamside corridors, aspen stands, wet meadows, orchards, and cropland. It thins out in the hot deserts and across much of the Central Valley, where the ground bakes too hard or floods too deep. Its elevational reach is long, from near sea level up to roughly three thousand meters in the southern Sierra. A suburban lawn and a mountain meadow can both suit it, as long as the soil stays workable and full of prey.
A life spent tunneling
This is a solitary, territorial animal. Each mole defends its tunnel system against neighbors, and the system itself is the whole world: shallow feeding runs that leave raised ridges on the surface, deeper galleries with nest chambers, and the mounds of soil pushed up from below. It doesn’t truly hibernate. It stays active in every season, and surface sign picks up after rain, when softened ground is easier to dig and prey moves up through it. Most people encounter the mole itself only when something forces it above ground: flooding, a garden spade, or a dog with opinions.
The network is more than feeding runs. Deep chambers hold the nest and serve as refuge from heat, cold, and flood, and a single mole may maintain tunnels beneath a surprising share of a garden. In the mountains, winter snow adds only a roof; the mole works on beneath it.
Earthworms, taken by feel
The diet is animal prey pulled from the soil: earthworms first, then insects and their larvae, spiders, centipedes, and other underground invertebrates, with an occasional scrap of plant material or a tiny vertebrate. A mole hunts largely by touch, reading vibrations in the soil around its tunnels, and its shallow runs double as pitfall traps that funnel prey within reach. The metabolism behind this is relentless, so feeding runs near constant, at any hour.
A short spring underground
Breeding runs from February into May. The female raises a single litter of two to five young, most often about four, in a grass-lined nest chamber deep in the system. The young nurse for roughly a month, then leave the nest by early summer to dig tunnels of their own. It is a fast turnover, matched to a life where few adults enjoy many springs. In the breeding months males tunnel farther than usual, pushing into neighboring systems, and once the season passes the old boundaries go back up.
The mole’s side of the argument
As a newly recognized species, this mole hasn’t been assessed on its own yet, and its formal conservation listing remains blank. Within its California range it persists across suburbs, farms, and wildlands alike, though urban development, intensive agriculture, and soil disturbance cut into habitat locally. The case for the mole is strong. Its tunnels aerate and mix the soil, cycle nutrients, and drain water into the ground. Its hunting keeps pest grubs and larvae in check, and it feeds hawks, owls, snakes, and foxes in turn. The ridges in the lawn are the invoice for services rendered.
