An unmistakable head and blow
The sperm whale’s enormous, blunt head can fill roughly a third of its body length. Its narrow lower jaw carries the working teeth, while matching sockets line the upper jaw. The skin behind the head often looks wrinkled, and small bumps follow the low dorsal hump toward the tail.
At the surface, the blow points forward and left because the single blowhole sits off-center. That angled spray is an excellent long-distance clue. Before a deep dive, the whale arches its back and lifts broad tail flukes above the water. It may then disappear for a long feeding descent.
Males grow far larger than females and travel into colder, higher-latitude waters. Females and young usually remain in warmer seas, where they form lasting social groups.
Diving beyond sunlight
Sperm whales hunt over deep water, including continental slopes, submarine canyons, and ocean basins. US records follow both ocean coasts, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Gulf of Mexico. Reports cluster along vessel routes and survey areas, so records aren’t a population count.
A feeding dive takes the whale below useful daylight. It navigates and hunts with echolocation clicks, listening for echoes from squid and fish. The large sound-producing structure inside its head helps focus those clicks. Oxygen-rich muscles and a slowed heart rate support long periods underwater.
Giant squid made this whale famous, but most meals involve smaller squid and deep-water fish. Circular scars around the head can mark struggles with squid. Because feeding happens beyond direct human sight, prey remains, tracking tags, and sound recordings provide much of the evidence.
Codas, clans, and calf care
Females and young form stable groups containing mothers, calves, sisters, and other relatives. Adults cooperate around calves, which can’t match the deepest dives. While some members feed below, another whale may remain nearer the young.
Sperm whales exchange patterned click sequences called codas. Different communities favor different patterns, much as human communities share learned customs. These sound traditions help define broad cultural clans whose members may occupy the same waters without using identical calls.
Young whales learn routes, feeding behavior, and social rules over many years. A calf nurses for an extended period and remains dependent beyond infancy. Males gradually leave their birth groups, spending time with other males before becoming more solitary adults. Mature males return to warm-water groups to mate.
The long shadow of whaling
Commercial whalers pursued sperm whales for oil in their blubber and head. The hunt killed large numbers over several centuries and changed population structure. International protection ended most commercial hunting, but recovery is slow for an animal that matures late and raises one calf at a time.
The IUCN classifies the species as Vulnerable. Current threats include fishing-gear entanglement, ship strikes, swallowed plastic, chemical pollution, and underwater noise. Lines can wrap around the jaw or tail, while large vessels may be difficult to avoid near busy routes.
Sound deserves special attention because sperm whales depend on it in deep darkness. Shipping, industrial work, and powerful sonar can mask communication or alter behavior. Scientists don’t yet know how every kind of noise affects feeding success across a lifetime.
Connecting the surface and deep ocean
Sperm whales carry nutrients upward through feeding and waste, while their carcasses deliver food to the seafloor. Their appetite also links surface ecosystems to squid and fish populations that people rarely see.
Individuals can live for many decades, allowing knowledge to persist within families. That memory may help groups respond to shifting prey and changing seas. Losing an experienced adult can therefore remove more than one breeding animal.
Strandings can place distressed whales near people, but trained wildlife agencies lead those responses. Confirmed observations contribute most when they document location and behavior without disturbance. Each reliable report sharpens a still-incomplete view of one of the ocean’s deepest hunters.
