Unmistakable in flight or in hand
No other bat in the region looks quite like this one. Adults carry three bold white spots, one over each shoulder and one on the rump, set against black fur across the back. The ears are enormous, rounded, and pale pink, almost translucent. They dwarf the small dark face beneath them, and the underside is far lighter than the back. The pattern reads clearly even from a distance or in a quick flashlight beam.
The closest lookalikes are other big-eared bats of the same dry country. Townsend’s big-eared bat has ears nearly as large, but it’s uniformly brown with no white spots. It also carries a pair of fleshy lumps on its nose. Allen’s big-eared bat is dark and grizzled with a small lappet at the base of each ear. It never shows the black-and-white saddle pattern. Pallid bat shares much of the same range and has large ears too. Its fur runs pale cream to tan, and its face is broad rather than dark and marked.

A cliff-anchored range across the arid West
Recent records cluster in Nevada and Colorado, with smaller but established footprints in New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Utah. The species also turns up in western Canada and Mexico, so records in the United States cover only part of its full range. Where it settles follows rock, not vegetation. Spotted bats roost in narrow cracks high on cliffs, canyon walls, and rock outcrops. From there they fly out to feed over open basins, pinyon-juniper slopes, ponderosa forest edges, and streamside corridors.
That dependence on vertical rock explains why records stay thin even in landscapes that otherwise look ideal. A valley full of moths can still go unused if there’s no cliff nearby with a suitable crack. A rugged canyon with only modest foraging habitat can rack up repeated records for that reason alone. Elevation reports for the species run from low desert basins to more than 10,800 feet, spanning nearly the full vertical range available across the interior West. Most records land in the middle elevations, where cliffs and open foraging ground sit close together.
Hunting moths with calls people can sometimes hear
Spotted bats specialize on large night-flying insects, above all moths. Their echolocation sets them apart from almost every other bat on the continent. The calls run low in frequency, often near the edge of human hearing. That’s part of why people occasionally notice a spotted bat overhead without a detector. The low pitch likely helps it close in on moths tuned to detect the higher-frequency calls most bats use, and it suits a hunting style built around open air rather than tight cover.
They typically forage alone, flying repeated paths from a day roost out to feeding grounds that can sit a few miles away. Open water, wet meadows, canyon mouths, and forest clearings all serve as hunting ground when large moths are active. Diet records rarely resolve past broad insect categories, but the pattern holds. This is a bat built for listening and maneuvering in open night air. It doesn’t glean prey off the ground or chase small insects in dense swarms.
One pup and a roost that isn’t easily replaced
Spotted bats don’t gather in the large visible colonies familiar from many cave-roosting species. They’re usually solitary or found in very small numbers, tucked into cracks too narrow and too high to inspect from below. Females raise a single pup, generally born in early summer. Young bats lack the sharp adult pattern until they mature.
That one-pup strategy leaves little room for quick recovery after losses. A cliff crack used across years functions as a fixed anchor point in a landscape where good roosts are already scarce. Losing one site can matter far more than losing a single night’s shelter. Much of the species’ apparent rarity likely reflects how hard it is to survey. Day roosts hide the bats from view, and most detections depend on acoustic gear or a brief encounter near water.
A data-poor bat worth protecting
The IUCN lists the spotted bat as Least Concern. That’s a global rating, and it doesn’t capture how thin and scattered its populations run across parts of the West. Protecting known roost cliffs, limiting disturbance near them, and keeping insect-rich foraging ground intact matter more here than managing one continuous range. White-nose syndrome has hit many hibernating cave bats hard, but this species’ ecology sets it apart. Its roosts are rock crevices, not the dense cave clusters that group hit hardest.
For anyone trying to identify a bat in the dry interior West, the spotted bat is one of the few cases where color pattern alone settles it. Big pale ears point to several species. Big pale ears paired with a black back and three white spots point to only one, the sole member of its genus and one of the most visually distinctive mammals to fly through the western night.
