Ears that give it away
Townsend’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii) carries two field marks that make it easy to name at a glance. Its ears rival its head and body in length, and a pair of rounded lumps rise from the muzzle. At rest, the ears curl back along the shoulders like coiled ribbons, then unfurl and stand tall the moment the bat wakes. The fur runs soft brown to gray-brown above and paler below, without the frosted or two-toned look some other western bats show.
Those nose lumps are the fastest way to rule out lookalikes. Pallid bat has big ears too, but its face is broader and its fur often looks creamier. Allen’s big-eared bat comes closest, with ears that sit free at the base rather than joined-looking across the forehead. Long-eared myotis can fool a quick glance in a roost photo, but it’s smaller, with a plainer muzzle and no paired lumps.
Roosts across the West, with two isolated outliers
The species holds its broadest continuity across the western United States, from the Pacific coast through the Great Basin, the Rockies, and the Southwest. California carries the deepest record set by far. Steady reporting also comes from Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Kansas, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Two isolated eastern populations, the Ozark big-eared bat and the Virginia big-eared bat, complicate that western picture. Both carry far stronger legal protection than the species as a whole.
What ties the range together isn’t one habitat type. It’s a stable roost within flying range of moth-rich hunting ground. The bat uses caves, lava tubes, abandoned mines, bridges, old buildings, and rock crevices. Around those roosts it hunts along forest edges, desert washes, oak-juniper slopes, streamside corridors, and canyon mouths. Records stretch from sea level to well above 9,800 feet. That spread points to a species that cares less about elevation than about finding the right shelter at any height.

A whisper built for moths
This bat flies slowly and close to cover, tracking cliff faces, vegetation, and roost entrances rather than streaking over open water. Its broad wings and oversized ears let it turn tightly and hover for a moment while closing on prey. Moths make up the bulk of its diet. It hunts them with a low-intensity echolocation call that carries only a short distance, and that’s a real tradeoff. The quiet call lets the bat close in on moths equipped to hear a louder hunter coming. It also forces the bat to work at close range with careful control. Beetles, flies, and other soft-bodied insects round out meals when moths thin out through the season.

One pup, a loyal colony, and a long winter
Females gather into maternity colonies in late spring and raise a single pup each year. A colony grows slowly even in a strong season. Pups need a quiet, stable roost through the nursery period, and a colony that’s forced out doesn’t simply relocate next door. Roost loyalty runs deep enough that a lost site can sit empty for years before bats return, if they return at all.
Mating happens in fall, but fertilization waits until after winter. Through hibernation the bats settle into cool caves and mines, shifting spots within the same site as temperature and humidity change. They rouse more often than many other hibernating bats. Each arousal spends stored fat that has to last until insects reappear in spring, so what looks like restlessness is really a costly habit the species can’t easily give up. A warm chamber that suits a maternity colony in June is rarely the same spot that suits hibernation in January. That’s why managers often protect specific entrances or seasons rather than treating a whole cave the same way year-round.
Quiet at the entrance, secure at the roost
The IUCN lists Townsend’s big-eared bat as Least Concern overall, but that verdict hides real local risk. The Ozark and Virginia big-eared bats hold much smaller ranges than western populations and carry federal endangered status. Even healthy western colonies can hinge on a handful of caves, mines, or buildings doing double duty as maternity and winter shelter.
Roost disturbance is the main threat. Other pressures include mine closures, loss of old structures, vandalism at cave mouths, and disease risk where hibernating bat communities overlap with white-nose syndrome. Closing an abandoned mine can protect people while erasing a roost that took decades to establish, unless the closure accounts for bats already using it. Bat-friendly gates solve that tension by keeping people out while leaving the entrance open to flight.

For people who manage these sites, the clearest sign of success is simple: a colony that keeps coming back. Repeated occupancy means the surrounding landscape still supplies enough moths, night-roosting spots, and secure daytime shelter. That makes Townsend’s big-eared bat a useful barometer for cave and mine stewardship. Protect the entrance, keep the approach habitat intact, and the bat tends to confirm it by returning season after season.
