Townsend’s big-eared bats have been reported from California’s coast to its dry interior, wherever caves, mines, or quiet buildings provide sheltered roosts. Records around Point Reyes and the Golden Gate show that suitable refuges can occur close to busy coastal communities, while Channel Islands reports add an offshore setting.
Reports rise sharply in April and again in July, rather than following one smooth seasonal curve. That split may reflect spring activity and later summer surveys, not two population peaks. Winter records are fewer but span every month, so the file supports year-round documentation without showing how many bats remain active or hidden in roosts.
