White-tailed deer are widespread across Nebraska but are especially at home in the wooded east and along river corridors. Crop edges, shelterbelts, riparian timber, and brushy draws give them the close pairing of forage and escape cover they favor; mule deer become the more likely deer in much of the open west.

Where to look

The Platte River corridor, Indian Cave State Park, and Ponca State Park all combine timber with openings. Scan field margins at dawn and dusk and watch carefully along quiet park roads, without approaching or feeding deer.

They are present year-round, with Nebraska observations highest from May through July. Autumn’s rut and winter concentrations can also make deer easier to notice even when reporting volume is lower.
