Fox squirrel reports in California follow an introduced animal closely tied to planted trees, farms, suburbs, and city parks. The San Joaquin Valley and the San Luis and Sacramento refuge areas put many records in landscapes shaped by irrigation, agriculture, and settlement rather than remote forest.

Reports reach their strongest monthly peak in April, then stay substantial through the warmer part of the year. Leaf cover, daylight, squirrel activity, and observer effort can all change that curve, so it doesn’t measure the size of the population.

Repeated records can show where fox squirrels have become established, while a lone report may reflect movement or release. California’s cities and agricultural valleys are watched far more often than private rural ground, which makes the submitted record pattern uneven.
