Virginia opossums reach the cold northern portion of their range in Iowa. They use wooded waterways, farmsteads, brush piles, and residential edges where den sites and varied food are available, but exposed ears and tails make severe winter weather a real constraint.

Wooded country around Decorah and Yellow River State Forest and the Upper Mississippi refuge corridor offers riparian travel cover. Nighttime records and road encounters contribute heavily for this species, so mapped observations should not be read as a precise measure of local density.

Reports are year-round but rise in December and again in February and March. Sparse vegetation improves visibility, and late-winter breeding movement may increase encounters even though cold snaps can sharply limit activity.
