Virginia opossums are most closely associated with eastern Nebraska’s wooded streams, farms, and towns, but river corridors and irrigated settlements help them reach well onto the Plains. Hollow trees, outbuildings, brush piles, and easy access to water provide shelter in a climate that tests this poorly insulated marsupial.

Where to look

Indian Cave State Park and wooded neighborhoods or campgrounds along major rivers offer suitable habitat. Opossums are nocturnal and are most often noticed crossing roads or foraging slowly after dark. Watch from a distance and secure pet food and trash rather than attracting them.

Nebraska records show no pronounced seasonal peak. Opossums occur year-round, though winter cold can limit how long they remain above ground.
