Wolverine sightings in California are so rare that many trace back to individual animals rather than a breeding population. A single wolverine nicknamed Buddy turned up on trail cameras near the Sierra crest and Tahoe from 2008 to 2018 after wandering in from the Rocky Mountains, and other lone travelers have been documented near Yosemite and the Sequoia high country since. Those three places lining up with exactly that kind of high-elevation wandering route is no accident.

California lists the species S1, critically imperiled at the state level, the most serious rarity rank NatureServe assigns, which fits a record count still in the teens after more than two decades of tracking.

The monthly numbers are too thin to support a real seasonal read. February holds a slightly higher count than other months, but with so few records overall that’s closer to noise than to a documented pattern in when wolverines pass through the state.
