Wildlife crews running camera traps across the Northern Rockies rarely see a wolverine twice. Most surveys turn up a single grainy photo and nothing more, because an animal that suspects it is being watched simply keeps moving, often for miles, over terrain that stops almost everything else. It crosses avalanche chutes and frozen passes that other carnivores route around. It will drag a moose leg out of a wolf kill while the wolves are still standing nearby. The reputation for ferocity that follows this species everywhere is not folklore. It is closer to a survival strategy: a 30-pound animal making its living in places too cold, too steep. Too empty for almost anything else to compete with it.

A small bear’s build on a weasel’s frame

At a distance, a wolverine reads as a compact, dark-furred bear cub rather than a member of the weasel family. It is the largest land-dwelling member of the weasel family, with a round, broad head, short rounded ears. Small eyes set into a blunt face. Adult males run 26 to 40 pounds and females 17 to 26 pounds, carried on a low, heavy-shouldered body with a bushy tail. A pale band of “frosted” fur runs from the shoulders along both flanks to the base of the tail, breaking up the otherwise chocolate-brown coat and usually the fastest way to separate a wolverine from a dark young black bear at range. The paws are the giveaway up close: five toes each, tipped with curved, semi-retractile claws, spread wide enough to work like built-in snowshoes and keep the animal on top of snow that would bury a coyote to the chest. That’s only part of the picture.

Snow is the map, not the compass

Latitude alone does not explain where wolverines turn up. What predicts their range almost perfectly is persistent spring snowpack, the kind that survives into May and gives females secure denning cover. That single requirement concentrates the national population in Alaska and pushes the rest into high, cold pockets of the Northern Rockies in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, with smaller numbers holding on in the Washington and Oregon Cascades and scattered individuals reappearing in California’s Sierra Nevada and the mountains of Utah. The species once ranged well south of that core, through the southern Rockies and into the Sierra, before early-1900s fur trapping erased it from most of the Lower 48. Its capacity to cover ground is still on display: in 2009 a GPS-collared male nicknamed M56 walked roughly 500 miles out of Wyoming’s Wind River Range into Colorado, the first wolverine confirmed there in about ninety years, then kept wandering for another decade before its signal went dark in the Dakotas. That kind of dispersal, not a settled breeding population, is what still puts the species on Colorado’s map today.

The high country’s clean-up crew

A wolverine’s jaw and molars are built for a job almost no other North American carnivore wants: cracking open carcasses that have frozen solid. Roughly four in ten meals come from scavenged carrion, mostly moose, caribou. Elk that died from winter, avalanche, or another predator’s kill. The same proportion again comes from live prey the wolverine catches itself, ground squirrels, voles, lemmings, snowshoe hares. Occasionally an ungulate calf or a weakened adult it can run down in deep snow where longer-legged animals flounder. The rest, roughly a fifth of the diet, is berries and other plant material gathered in the short subarctic summer. Surplus meat rarely goes to waste. Wolverines cache food in snowbanks and rock crevices the way a household uses a chest freezer, returning to a stashed carcass weeks later when fresh kills are scarce.

A territory too big for one animal to defend

Wolverines are largely solitary outside the breeding season. The home ranges that go with that solitude are enormous, some tracked males patrol territory on the order of several hundred square miles, overlapping the smaller ranges of two or three females. That scale helps explain an odd wrinkle in the observation record: sightings logged through the day cluster heavily around midday and early afternoon, which looks like a diurnal animal, while foraging studies that track collared individuals around the clock describe wolverines as primarily nocturnal hunters. Both are true in their own way. An animal moving continuously across a range that size blurs day and night. The midday spike in public sightings mostly reflects when hikers and researchers are out on the same trails, not when the wolverine itself is most active.

Snow-tunnel nurseries

Wolverines breed in summer. But Through delayed implantation the fertilized embryo does not begin developing in earnest until roughly 35 days before birth, timing the litter to arrive in February or March when snow is still deep enough to dig a secure natal den, often a tunnel bored into a drift or packed avalanche debris. Litters average two to three kits. Females do not reproduce every year. Across tracked populations, breeding females raise a litter roughly once every other year rather than annually. Kits stay denned and dependent for weeks before starting to travel with their mother. Young wolverines reach breeding age around two years old for females, somewhat later for males. In captivity, individuals have lived close to 20 years, well beyond what field biologists typically document in the wild.

Listed for what’s melting, not what’s hunted

Globally, the wolverine’s population across Russia, Scandinavia, and Canada is healthy enough that the IUCN rates the species Least Concern. The Lower 48 tells a much narrower story: a small, genetically isolated tail of that range, confined to the same high-elevation snow patches its denning biology depends on. In 2023 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the North American wolverine as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The reasoning was pointedly not about trapping or habitat conversion, both of which had already stabilized decades earlier. It was about a warming climate shrinking the persistent spring snowpack that mother wolverines need to den safely, a threat that shows up on a map rather than in a hunting season. Adult wolverines have few natural predators. But Gray wolves are one of the rare animals capable of killing one, another reason the species favors terrain too rough and too cold for wolves to easily follow.
