The only member of its genus
The common dolphin is the sole living species in Delphinus, the type genus that gives the whole dolphin subfamily its name. Its pale hourglass pattern along the flanks, crossing a darker back and lighter belly, is a reliable field mark that sets it apart from most other dolphins sharing US waters.
Recorded coast to coast, but densest off California
Records span both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, from Washington down through California and around to Florida, Massachusetts, and the mid-Atlantic states. They add up to nearly 17,000 confirmed sightings across the whole range, among the largest US totals recorded for any dolphin species. California carries by far the largest share. Sightings hold up in every month of the year, with a broad rise through late spring and summer. That suggests this dolphin doesn’t leave US waters so much as shift where it concentrates through the seasons.
Active by day, hunting in open water
Observation activity peaks through the morning and early afternoon, when common dolphins are easiest to spot traveling and feeding at the surface. Recorded prey includes several squid species, blue mussels, and schooling fish like Pacific chub mackerel and Pacific sardine. That diet favors open, productive water over sheltered coves. Larger predators recorded taking common dolphins include great white sharks, orcas, and two smaller toothed-whale hunters, the pygmy killer whale and false killer whale. Both are capable of taking prey nearly their own size when hunting in a group.
Life at a fast pace for a dolphin
Pregnancy runs close to ten months, and females don’t typically start breeding until they’re around five years old. A female usually raises one calf at a time and may only calve every two to three years. Wild common dolphins have been recorded living to 25, a solid lifespan for an animal that spends its whole life exposed in open water.
Conservation
The IUCN lists the common dolphin as Least Concern. It remains one of the most frequently recorded dolphins in US coastal waters, found from cold Pacific upwelling zones to warm Atlantic bays. It shows no sign of the widespread decline that has hit some other small cetaceans.
