The complete county distribution, spread across 48 Iowa counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

Coyotes occur throughout Iowa’s farm country, grasslands, wooded draws, and metropolitan fringes. Their abundance rank reflects broad distribution, yet direct sightings remain relatively uncommon because coyotes travel mainly around dusk, dawn, and night and quickly learn to avoid people.

Loess Hills State Forest, DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, and the broken woodland-and-field landscape near Decorah all offer extensive edge and travel cover. Tracks, scat, and evening calls are more likely evidence than a close view; observers should never approach or feed them.

Reports are highest in January and February, with another rise in April. Winter breeding movement, bare fields, and snow tracking can boost detections, while spring activity around denning territories may contribute to the later peak.
