The complete county distribution, spread across 47 Nebraska counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

Coyotes occupy essentially every Nebraska landscape, from Sandhills ranchland and western shortgrass to eastern farms and metropolitan fringes. Their flexible diet and ability to travel through narrow strips of cover let them thrive in places too open or fragmented for larger predators.

Where to look

Oglala National Grassland, the country around Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock, and broad Sandhills valleys offer long sightlines. Watch near dawn or dusk for a lean, level-backed canid moving purposefully across open ground; hearing a family group at night is much more common than seeing one.

Coyotes are active year-round, and the Nebraska record set shows no strong seasonal peak. Observe from a distance and never feed them, especially around towns and campgrounds.
