Fox squirrels are among Nebraska’s most visible mammals. They follow mature trees through eastern towns, farmsteads, shelterbelts, and the cottonwood galleries of the Platte and Missouri, then extend west wherever planted trees or wooded river corridors provide nuts, cavities, and overhead cover.
Where to look
Indian Cave and Ponca state parks offer extensive hardwood habitat, while city parks and riverside trails along the Platte can be equally productive. Look on the ground beneath oaks and walnuts in the morning, then scan trunks and broad limbs when a squirrel retreats overhead.
Fox squirrels remain active all year. Nebraska reports peak in April and May, when leaf-out still leaves good sightlines and squirrels spend conspicuous periods foraging.
