A tail too long to miss
Long-tailed voles look like an ordinary member of the group at first glance: small, round-bodied, short-eared, with fur running gray to brown above and paler underneath. Look at the tail, though, and the picture changes. It’s noticeably longer than on most North American voles, often trailing well past the body instead of stopping at a stub. That single feature is the fastest way to separate this species from lookalikes such as the montane vole, which reads stockier and shorter-tailed, or the Mogollon vole, which runs smaller and warmer brown with a shorter tail of its own.
Beyond the tail, this vole doesn’t offer much drama. It’s compact and thickly furred, built along the same lines as most small grassland rodents, and easy to overlook in the field. The tail is the field mark worth remembering. Everything else about its build is fairly ordinary for the genus.

No worn paths, just wide-open range
Most voles are creatures of habit. They chew narrow runways through grass and stick to them, so tracking one down often means finding the path before finding the animal. The long-tailed vole doesn’t play by that rule. It moves more loosely through its habitat and draws on a wider range of cover than most of its relatives.
That flexibility shows up in where it turns up. Records span streamside thickets, wet mountain meadows, brushy forest edges, talus slopes, and pockets of damp ground tucked into otherwise dry country. A canyon bottom lined with willows can hold long-tailed voles while a dry ridge a short walk away holds none. The species isn’t picky about one habitat type so much as it’s picky about moisture, cover, and loose ground it can burrow into and hide in quickly.
Cool, damp corners across the West
This is a western species through and through. Records cluster across a dozen states, from New Mexico and California through the Great Basin and the Rockies, up into Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It’s recorded from near sea level to well above 9,800 feet, and most sightings land high, in cool mountain country rather than the lowlands.
That elevation pattern tells a real story. In the Southwest, suitable habitat mostly exists as islands: mountain ranges, plateaus, and drainages rising out of desert country. Farther north, cooler regional temperatures let the vole drop to lower ground, so Alaska and the Pacific states show it using wet openings and forest edges closer to sea level. Either way, the animal is chasing the same conditions: cool, damp, and well covered.

What it eats, and what hunts it
Green plants make up most of the diet, with seeds filling out the rest. Grasses, sedges, and other low vegetation get clipped close to cover, and the vole retreats fast whenever something moves nearby. It eats insects too, when they’re available, but plant food is what keeps this species going.
Being common and easy to catch makes it valuable food for a long list of hunters. American marten, stoats, gopher snakes, and rubber boas all take long-tailed voles when they can, and the real list of predators almost certainly runs longer than what’s been documented. Living along a stream edge or under a fallen log doesn’t offer much protection. Predators come from the air, the ground, and sometimes the same cover the vole is hiding in.
Breeding fast, living briefly
Like most voles, this species runs on a short, fast life cycle. Breeding is seasonal, picking up in spring and continuing into late summer across much of its range. Litters average around five young, and a female can raise more than one litter in a good year.
That pace doesn’t leave much room for a long life. Recorded lifespans top out around a year, and many individuals don’t make it that far. Predation, weather, and the sheer energy cost of staying warm-blooded and active all work against a long run. It’s a trade that favors fast reproduction over survival, common among small rodents built for turnover rather than old age.
Conservation status
The IUCN rates the long-tailed vole as Least Concern, and that fits a species with a broad western range and no single obvious point of vulnerability. It isn’t tracked as rare or declining across its range as a whole.
That doesn’t mean every population is safe from local pressure. Draining wetlands, trampling meadow vegetation, and simplifying stream edges can all remove the cover this species depends on. A long-tailed vole needs enough grass, shrub, and rock cover to move around unseen, and losing that cover locally can push it out even where the broader range looks secure.
