Round-tailed ground squirrel is the pale, upright ground squirrel of low desert flats in the Sonoran and Mojave region. In the United States it is centered in Arizona and southeastern California, with the strongest records in the lower Colorado River country, Phoenix basin, Tucson basin, and adjacent desert valleys. Its plain sandy coat, slim round tail, and colony mounds separate it from the striped antelope squirrels that share parts of the same desert.
Plain sandy body, pencil tail
This is a small ground squirrel with a rounded head, short ears, pale sandy or buff-gray fur, and a narrow cylindrical tail. The lack of stripes is important. Harris’ and white-tailed antelope squirrels both show clear white side stripes, while spotted ground squirrels show fine pale spots across the back. Round-tailed ground squirrel looks smoother, plainer, and more delicate, often sitting upright like a tiny sentry at the burrow edge. That’s only part of the picture.
Adults are usually 8 to 11 inches long. They weigh around 4.4 ounces, though that changes with season and condition. The feet are suited to quick travel across sandy soil, and the low, darting run makes the tail look almost like a trailing pencil.

Low desert range and burrow soils
The species is regional. It belongs to Sonoran and Mojave desert flats, washes, sandy bajadas, creosote-mesquite valleys, desert grassland edges, and irrigated margins where loose soil remains. Arizona holds the core of the U.S. range, with southeastern California an important western section. Records reach the edge of southern Nevada, but the animal’s main story is the Arizona-California low desert.
Good habitat has diggable soil, sparse to moderate shrub cover, and enough seasonal green growth to feed a colony. Hard-packed urban lots, pavement, and heavily compacted ground are poor substitutes. Golf-course edges, agricultural berms, and desert preserves can support colonies when soils stay loose and burrow entrances are not destroyed.
A social squirrel built around burrows
Round-tailed ground squirrels are often described as colonial or semi-colonial. Individuals keep their own burrow spaces but tolerate neighbors, and related females may cluster in productive areas. The colony is easiest to notice in spring, when animals pop up at multiple holes, give high calls, and drop below ground one after another.
Burrows are central to everything. They buffer heat, cold, predators, and drought. Entrances also create small mounds that alter plant growth and provide lookout points. Other desert animals may use old or vacant burrows, making the colony a small piece of habitat infrastructure.

Green food, heat, and dormant months
The diet is mostly green vegetation, seeds, cactus pads, mesquite leaves, and other plant material, with insects added when available. High-moisture foods are especially valuable because free water is scarce across much of the range. The squirrels feed during the day, but summer heat compresses activity into cooler windows.
This species spends a surprising share of the year underground. It can enter torpor during winter and also reduce activity during the hottest, driest parts of summer. In a good spring, colonies look busy and exposed. By late summer, many burrow systems seem quiet even when animals are still present below ground.
Breeding before the desert dries
Breeding begins early in the active season. Males emerge first, followed by females, and litters arrive after a gestation of about four weeks. Litter size can be large for such a small squirrel, which fits the high-predation life of an open-desert rodent.
Young first appear above ground during the spring green-up, when fresh plants are most available. Snakes, hawks, owls, badgers, foxes, coyotes, and bobcats all take round-tailed ground squirrels. Alarm calls and quick dives into burrows are therefore not occasional behaviors. They are the rhythm of the colony.

Conservation in fast-growing desert valleys
The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern, and it remains common in suitable low desert. The conservation issue is local habitat loss rather than rarity across the whole range. Central Arizona and southeastern California contain some of the fastest-changing desert valleys in North America, and colonies can disappear when loose soils are graded, compacted, paved, or isolated from native vegetation.
Where desert flats remain connected, round-tailed ground squirrels are resilient. They can live beside roads, fields, and neighborhoods if burrows persist and food plants return after rain. Their presence is a useful sign that a low desert site still has functioning soil, cover, and predator-prey connections rather than only ornamental desert surface.
