The field mark is in the tail. When a white-tailed antelope squirrel bolts across open desert, it often curls the tail over its back and flashes a white underside that looks brighter than the rest of the animal. That signal, plus a single pale stripe along each side, separates this small ground squirrel from most other rodents in the dry West.

It isn’t a chipmunk, though the pale side stripe can suggest one.
White-tailed antelope squirrels are compact and quick, with short rounded ears, dark eyes, gray-brown backs, and pale underparts. A clean white flank stripe runs from shoulder toward hip. Adults are usually about 7.5 to 9.5 inches long. They weigh close to 3.5 ounces, so a full-grown animal is smaller and slimmer than a rock squirrel or prairie dog. The tail isn’t long and plume-like like a tree squirrel’s. Its bright white underside and dark border still make it conspicuous.
That tail position matters in the field. A running animal may look like a striped blur until it stops on a rock or darts through brush, but the curled white tail is visible from surprising distance. Harris’ antelope squirrel is the closest visual match in the United States and has a similar single side stripe, but its tail underside is grayer and its body often looks warmer on the flanks. Common golden-mantled ground squirrel has a richer rusty mantle and black-bordered stripes. Round-tailed ground squirrel lacks the side stripe entirely and reads as a plain sandy animal.

Where It Lives In The United States
In the United States, white-tailed antelope squirrel is a western desert and dryland species. Its strongest footprint runs through California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon, with the densest records in Mojave Desert, Great Basin, Colorado Plateau, and adjacent desert-scrub country. The broader North American range continues into Baja California, but the national atlas page is best understood as a portrait of the arid interior West rather than a single-state animal.
Habitat varies more than the word desert suggests. The species uses creosote and saltbush flats, rocky washes, Joshua tree woodland, sagebrush-steppe edges, chaparral, desert grassland, and open pinyon-juniper country where the ground offers cover, seeds, and burrow sites. It is most at home where shrubs, rocks, fallen wood, or low cactus break up open ground. Fine sand alone is not enough. The animal needs places to vanish quickly.
White-tailed antelope squirrels often use burrows dug by kangaroo rats, ground squirrels, and other small mammals instead of excavating a large burrow system from scratch. That habit ties them to loose or broken soils with existing rodent activity. In much of the Great Basin and Mojave region, a good site is a mosaic of seed-bearing annuals, tough shrubs, rocks, and short dashes of open ground.

A Daylight Squirrel Built For Heat
This is a diurnal squirrel, active in daylight and visible when many desert mammals are hidden. It does not truly hibernate, although weather, season, and food availability change how much time individuals spend above ground. Surface activity tends to be strongest in cooler parts of the day during hot months, with shorter bursts when heat is severe. The animal’s small size makes overheating a constant pressure, but it is unusually tolerant of high body temperatures for a mammal its size.
Several behaviors help it stay active in harsh conditions. It slips into shade, returns to burrows, and presses its belly against cooler soil to shed heat. The raised tail can cast a small patch of shade across the back, but the same tail also functions as a moving signal while the squirrel runs. The result is a mammal that can be seen in bright, dry country without being careless. It feeds quickly, pauses upright to scan, and keeps escape cover close.
White-tailed antelope squirrels are mostly solitary outside winter sheltering and breeding. Home ranges are modest, but a single animal may use several acres in daily movements as it links burrows, seed patches, shrubs, and lookout rocks. They are alert but not purely secretive. In parks, preserves, desert washes, and rocky trail corridors, a still observer may watch one feed or sit upright before it drops out of sight.
Food, Caches, And Desert Predators
The diet is omnivorous, with green plant material, seeds, fruits, cactus parts, insects, and occasional small vertebrates all in the mix. Spring growth brings more leaves and tender vegetation. Later in the year, seeds and fruit become more important, and cheek pouches let the squirrel move food back toward cover. Some cached seeds are later eaten. Others are missed, which makes the species a small but steady part of seed movement in desert shrublands.
Its predators are the familiar hunters of open western drylands: hawks, owls, snakes, foxes, bobcats, coyotes, badgers, and weasels. The squirrel’s first defense is speed over short distance, plus exact knowledge of nearby holes and rock gaps. The white tail flash may also draw a predator’s eye toward a moving signal instead of the body, especially when the squirrel is already within a few bounds of cover.

Breeding And Winter Survival
Breeding usually begins in late winter or early spring and can continue into early summer depending on latitude, elevation, and local conditions. Females normally raise one litter per year. Litter size is large for such a small squirrel, often around eight or nine young, and females have enough mammae to nurse a large litter. Young develop in the burrow and begin appearing above ground before full independence.
Most wild individuals do not live long. Juvenile mortality is high, and a small daylight squirrel faces constant pressure from predators, heat, drought, and food swings. The species offsets that risk with early maturity and large litters rather than long adult survival. In colder parts of the range, individuals may share winter dens, a practical way to conserve heat without becoming a highly social animal for the rest of the year.
Conservation Status
The IUCN rates the white-tailed antelope squirrel as Least Concern. That fits its wide range, its ability to use several kinds of arid habitat, and its continued presence across large areas of the western United States. It is not a federal conservation priority in the United States, and there is no evidence of a range-wide collapse.
The more meaningful concern is local habitat condition. Heavy grazing, dense development, road corridors, invasive grasses, and altered fire patterns can simplify the shrub-and-seed structure that supports desert small mammals. Where intact desert scrub, rocky washes, sagebrush flats, and pinyon-juniper openings remain connected, white-tailed antelope squirrel is still one of the most visible small mammals of the daylight desert.
