The sagebrush vole is the tiny, blunt-faced rodent that lives where western shrublands get sparse, cold, and gray. It is not a mouse of houses or grain bins, and it is not one of the long-tailed deer mice that dash through campgrounds. Lemmiscus curtatus is a short-tailed vole of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, bunchgrass, and open basin country, built for low cover and narrow runways rather than speed in the open.
Across the United States, its recent records cluster in the interior West: Montana, Nevada, Idaho, California, Utah, Colorado, Washington, and Wyoming. That pattern fits the animal’s name but not always the cartoon version of sagebrush country. Sagebrush voles use dry shrubsteppe, high basins, cold desert edges, grassy openings with scattered shrubs, and the margins of montane sage flats. They can live in places that look harsh from a distance, as long as low vegetation, loose soil, and enough plant food create cover close to the ground.
A Vole With A Lemming-Like Shape
It isn’t a house mouse or a long-tailed campground visitor.
Sagebrush voles are small even by vole standards. Adults are roughly hand-length, with dense gray to buff-gray fur, pale underparts, short legs, small rounded ears, and a very short tail that is furred and often hard to see. The body looks more rounded than a mouse, and the head is blunt rather than sharply pointed. In a quick view, that compact shape matters more than fine color.
The species is the only living member of the genus Lemmiscus, a name that hints at its lemming-like look. It does not have the long, naked-looking tail of a deer mouse, and it lacks the bold reddish back stripe of a red-backed vole. Compared with many Microtus voles, it often reads paler and more desert-gray, with a stubby tail and a face that seems tucked into the body.

Where It Fits In Western Shrub Country
The national range is best understood as a patchwork across the Intermountain West rather than a continuous blanket. Montana and Nevada hold many of the strongest recent records, with additional clusters through Idaho, Utah, northeastern California, Colorado, Washington, and Wyoming. Oregon, the Dakotas, and Kansas have scattered or marginal records, but the current core is the shrubsteppe and sagebrush-basin country of the West.
Elevation adds another layer. Sagebrush voles occur from low basins into high plateaus and mountain parks, with many records in cool, open country rather than hot low desert. In the Great Basin and Rockies, they often occupy sage flats, grassy draws, and shrub openings where winter snow, summer drought, and grazing all shape the plant cover. In California and Washington, the species is more local, tied to eastern interior habitats rather than coastal or forested landscapes.
That patchiness is normal for a small herbivore that depends on ground-level structure. A basin can look broadly suitable, yet the vole may be concentrated where sagebrush roots, grass mats, and loose soil allow burrows and surface trails. Heavy disturbance that removes cover can make a site less usable, while dense grass without shrub structure may favor other vole species.
Food, Trails, And Life Under Cover
Sagebrush voles are herbivores. Green grasses, leaves, and forbs are important in the growing season, while sagebrush, bark, twigs, and tougher plant parts can matter more in winter. The animal’s body plan suits a life spent close to its food: it clips vegetation, uses runways under grass and litter, and retreats into burrows or low shrub cover when exposed.
Its activity can span day and night, but dawn, dusk, and darker hours are often important. In winter, snow cover can become part of the habitat rather than only a problem. Subnivean tunnels and runways let voles move below the surface, feeding and avoiding some predators while the above-ground landscape is frozen and exposed.

Many predators can make a meal of a sagebrush vole. Owls, hawks, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, weasels, snakes, and other hunters use the same open-country edges. For predators, voles are a small but steady packet of energy. For the shrubland, they are plant consumers, soil movers, and prey, linking low vegetation to carnivores that may range over much larger territories.
Breeding In Fast Small-Mammal Time
Like many voles, sagebrush voles can reproduce quickly when conditions allow. Gestation is short, litters usually include several young, and females may produce multiple litters in a year. Young are born in nests inside burrows, where the tight tunnel system protects them from weather and some predators.
This fast life history helps the species respond to good plant years, but it also means local numbers can rise and fall sharply. A productive spring can support more breeding, while drought, hard winters, poor cover, and predator pressure can reduce a local colony. The result is a species that may be present but rarely obvious unless someone is trapping, surveying, or watching the ground carefully in the right habitat.
Conservation And Field Confusions
The IUCN rates the sagebrush vole as Least Concern, and the species remains broadly distributed across western North America. That does not make every local population secure. Sagebrush ecosystems have been reduced or altered by development, invasive annual grasses, changed fire regimes, conversion to cropland, and heavy disturbance. A small vole can persist in modest patches, but it still depends on the same low, structurally complex shrubland that supports many larger and more famous sagebrush animals.
Field identification is usually a matter of eliminating other small rodents. Deer mice have longer tails and bigger, more exposed ears. Montane and meadow voles look chunkier and often darker, while long-tailed voles show a tail that projects much farther behind the body. A sagebrush vole looks compact, gray-brown, short-tailed, and close to the ground, almost as if the shrubsteppe has shaped the animal into a moving clump of fur and whiskers.
