A vole told apart by its skull, not its face
The western heather vole is a small, soft-furred rodent of western mountain country, brownish gray above with a silvery underside, small rounded ears, and a tail distinctly shorter than its body. It measures about 4.3 inches long, roughly the size of a large thumb. Adults weigh around 1.4 ounces. Fresh photos sometimes show a hint of orange hair inside the ears, a useful clue when the animal pauses out in the open instead of ducking under moss.
That clue only goes so far. In the field, this species shares its range with the montane vole and the long-tailed vole. Telling them apart from a glance or even a decent photo isn’t always reliable. Biologists often lean on skull and tooth features, not fur color or ear shape, to confirm which vole they’re holding. The montane vole tends to look rounder and plainer, without the same silvery underside or orange ear lining. The long-tailed vole usually shows a longer tail relative to its body. Anyone identifying a vole from a trail photo in mixed mountain shrub country should treat that identification as provisional.

Records cluster in western mountains, not lowlands
Western heather vole records in the United States center on Colorado and Wyoming, with further records from California, Utah, Minnesota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, and Washington. Roughly 220 GBIF records since 2000 sketch a range that runs through the central and northern Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, and scattered northern and coastal pockets rather than one continuous belt.
Elevation ties the range together better than state lines do. Recorded animals span from about 1,400 feet up to nearly 12,900 feet, with a median close to 3,700 feet. That spread reflects the habitat itself: alpine and tundra-like openings, montane forest, shrubland, and a few coastal sites, more than any single elevation band. In southern states the vole tends to sit higher on the mountain, while farther north similar cool, shrubby conditions can occur much lower.
Most records cluster in July, August, and September, which likely says more about when field crews and hikers are out in high country than about the vole’s own schedule. Snow closes off a lot of that terrain for much of the year, and this species is known to stay active under snowpack through the cold months rather than disappear from the landscape.
Bark, buds, and berries: an unusual vole diet
Most voles lean heavily on grass and other soft green growth. The western heather vole leans more on woody plants. Diet studies put roughly 60 percent of its intake as general plant matter, with fruit and seeds each contributing about a fifth. Recorded food-web links include bearberry and common bilberry. Older natural history accounts describe the animal working through bark, buds, and shrub leaves, especially heath-family plants, as green growth becomes scarce.
Caching is part of that strategy. Rather than foraging fresh each night, this vole gathers plant material near its burrows and runways and draws on the stockpile later. It stays active on and off around the clock rather than keeping to a strict day or night schedule, which suits a life spent mostly hidden under moss, shrubs, and snow instead of out in the open. Owls, hawks, weasel-family predators, and foxes are the likely threats, and the vole’s main defense is simply staying out of sight.
Quick maturity, short mountain summers
Females reach breeding condition fast, maturing in a little over a month, and gestation runs about 22 days. Litters average around 4.6 young but range from two to nine, and a female can produce more than two litters in a good year. That pace fits a short high-elevation growing season: breed fast, raise several litters while snow is off the ground, then rely on caches and buried cover once winter closes back in. Wild individuals can live up to four years, which is long for a small rodent, though most likely die well before that in the wild.
Secure globally, hard to track locally
IUCN lists the western heather vole as a species of Least Concern globally, though its population trend isn’t well established one way or the other. That secure label sits alongside a records picture that’s genuinely thin. Few observers, low densities, and habitat that mixes shrub cover with open ground all make this vole easy to miss even where it’s present. A short records list in a given state reflects survey effort and detectability at least as much as scarcity.
Habitat that keeps the species going includes shrubby forest edges, damp meadow margins, and open conifer stands with a low shrub layer. That habitat can erode quietly through grazing, development, or simplified forest management, and no one notices the vole disappear first. For most people the western heather vole will stay a name attached to a trail-side photo or a museum specimen rather than a familiar backyard animal. Its story is less about rarity and more about how much of a mountain landscape stays unrecorded even now.
