A predator built to dive
An adult water shrew measures about 3 inches from nose to rump, with a long, bicolored tail trailing behind it. It weighs just a quarter to two-thirds of an ounce, about the heft of two sugar packets. That still makes it the largest member of its genus, several times the bulk of a dwarf shrew or a pygmy shrew. Its fur runs blackish to silvery gray on top and pale underneath. The moment it hits the water, trapped air turns the whole coat a shimmering silver. That air layer does double duty. It insulates against water that would chill a body this small within minutes, and it adds lift the shrew has to fight with every stroke. Its enlarged hind feet carry a fringe of stiff hairs along the toes, turning them into small paddles built for pushing down and along a streambed. Some individuals have even been filmed using trapped air under their feet to skitter briefly across still water before diving. It’s a trick that looks almost like walking on water.
Hunting by touch in the dark
A dive usually lasts 30 to 45 seconds, and the shrew has to eat roughly every ten minutes to fuel a metabolism that burns through nearly its own body weight in food each day. Whiskers do the real work down there, not eyes. The shrew sweeps them across the streambed to find prey hidden under rocks. Some researchers think it also puffs a small bubble of air onto a possible target and breathes it back in to catch the scent, an underwater version of sniffing. Its high-pitched squeaks have raised questions about echolocation, though nothing has confirmed true sonar yet. Aquatic insect larvae make up most of the diet: caddisflies, stoneflies, and mayfly nymphs pried from under rocks, plus small fish like the common shiner and the occasional salamander larva. Roughly a third of what it eats is scavenged rather than freshly caught. It’s even been recorded taking small snakes such as the red-bellied snake and Dekay’s brownsnake. That’s a bold move for an animal barely bigger than a thumb. A Coast Mountain Kingsnake is among its own predators, proof that the same stream banks that feed the shrew can hide something hunting it back.
Cold mountain streams, coast to coast
Confirmed records stretch from Alaska down through the Rockies into Arizona and New Mexico. From there they run west across California and the Pacific Northwest, and east to scattered pockets in the Appalachians and New England. Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada account for the largest share of documented sightings, most of them clustered high in mountain streams. Most sightings sit well above 6,500 feet in those states, while a smaller, separate cluster survives near sea level along the coasts of Maine, Rhode Island, and Alaska. Records span from just above sea level to nearly 11,200 feet, with a typical sighting closer to 8,200 feet. Same species, two very different elevations, tied together by one requirement: cold, clean, fast-moving water carrying enough oxygen to support the insect larvae it eats. A warm, silty, slow stream won’t hold a water shrew, no matter how close it sits to the mapped range.
Spotting one in the water
Size and color carry most of the identification work. Two relatives share its streams. The dwarf shrew is barely a third the size and colored pale grayish brown instead of blackish silver, and the montane shrew is smaller and plain brown, without the fringed, paddle-like hind feet built for diving. Neither of those relatives goes underwater to hunt, so a shrew you actually catch swimming is almost certainly this one. Voles sometimes turn up on the same banks. Their blunt faces, ears buried in fur, and short tails set them apart at a glance from the twitchy, whiskered snout typical of any water-loving shrew.
A fast, short life
Breeding runs from late winter into late summer, depending on latitude. Gestation lasts about three weeks, and litters average five or six young. A female can raise two or three litters in a single season, and her young reach breeding age around three months old. Documented lifespans top out at about a year and a half, shorter than most of its shrew relatives. That’s likely the tradeoff for a body built to fuel nonstop cold-water diving instead of a long life. Adults live alone and defend their own stretch of stream, building small nests of dried plants near the water’s edge, and two water shrews that meet can end up in a real fight.
Common, but only where the water stays clean
The IUCN lists the water shrew as Least Concern, with no sign of a range-wide decline. Its real vulnerability is local, not global. It needs cold, well-oxygenated streams to survive. Silt, warming from lost streamside trees, and pollution can push it out of a stretch of water long before the species as a whole is at risk. Where the water stays cold and clean, from Yellowstone’s high creeks to Appalachian headwaters, the water shrew is likely to keep doing what it’s always done, mostly out of sight, underwater.
