A short-tailed shrew identified more by range than by looks
Elliot’s short-tailed shrew is one of the few venomous mammals anywhere. Its saliva carries a toxin strong enough to subdue prey much bigger than itself, and that trait alone sets the whole genus apart from almost every other mammal on the continent. The animal is heavy-bodied and blunt, with a long whisker-covered snout and ears buried in fur. Its eyes are so reduced that some individuals have permanently closed eyelids. Adults run only about 3.5 to 4.7 inches long, tail included, giving it a compact, mole-like look next to slimmer long-tailed shrews. It weighs around half an ounce, barely more than a couple of coins. It gets around mostly by touch and by soft clicking sounds that work something like echolocation in the dark of its tunnels.
Telling this shrew apart from its relatives is less about markings and more about paperwork. It was treated as a subspecies of the northern short-tailed shrew until 1981. Researchers split it out as its own species on the strength of range, skull shape, and genetic differences, not anything visible in the field. A paler form, B. h. plumbea, occurs in Texas and complicates the picture further. In practice, identifying one of these shrews usually comes down to where it was caught and a specimen in hand, not a quick look in tall grass.

Range centered on Kansas and the southern Plains
Recent records put this shrew across seven states: Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Arkansas. Kansas carries the bulk of the record set, with well over 250 entries against a total of roughly 390 logged since 2000. Iowa and Missouri trail some distance behind. That pattern points to a shrew centered on the central and southern Plains and the edge of the Ozarks, not one spread evenly across a wide range.
Recorded animals turn up mostly at modest elevation, typically around a thousand feet or less, with almost nothing above 3,300 feet. That fits an animal tied to soil and ground cover rather than to mountains. It uses grassland, farmland, and woodland edges without much preference among them. That suggests the deciding factor isn’t the broad habitat label but what’s happening at ground level: loose soil, enough moisture, and leaf litter or thatch to tunnel through.
Hunting, caching, and a bite built to subdue prey
This shrew burns energy fast and hunts around the clock in short bursts rather than keeping to one shift. Beetles, slugs, spiders, and earthworms make up most of its catch. Its diet also includes small vertebrates and some plant matter, a broader menu than the plain label “insectivore” suggests. The toxin in its saliva does the heavy work. Instead of killing prey outright, it can leave a larger animal partly paralyzed. That lets the shrew drag a still-living meal back to a cache and return to it later. That habit matters for an animal with such steep energy needs, since it turns one good hunt into food for several meals. The venom isn’t a danger to people; it exists to overpower insects, worms, and other small prey, not to defend against anything the shrew’s own size.

Kansas records climb through late summer and peak in October, while Iowa and Missouri instead show a July high. That split most likely reflects when small-mammal surveys run in each state, not a real jump in the shrew’s own activity. A secretive, mostly nocturnal animal like this rarely leaves a clean seasonal signal in casual sightings.
Fast breeding and a short life
Elliot’s short-tailed shrew breeds fast and doesn’t live long. Females can reach breeding age in under three months, males in about six weeks, and gestation runs roughly three weeks. A typical litter holds about five young, and a female can produce two to three litters in a season when conditions are good. Few individuals survive past two or three years in the wild. That steady output of young offsets a short lifespan and constant losses to weather, flooding, and predators.
Snakes take a documented share of those losses. Prairie kingsnakes and eastern milksnakes are recorded predators of this shrew, and the same secretive habits that make it hard to survey also make it hard to catch in the act of being eaten.
Conservation status and why the record stays thin
The IUCN lists Elliot’s short-tailed shrew as Least Concern, a status that reflects a wide range and no known major threat rather than a wealth of sightings. Shrews like this one are chronically under-recorded. They’re small, fast, mostly hidden underground or under litter, and rarely seen unless someone is actively trapping small mammals, so gaps on the map usually mean a lack of survey effort, not a lack of shrews.
The practical concern for this species is ground-level cover. Grass, crop margins, brushy edges, and leaf litter give it the moisture and prey base it needs. Those same features protect the earthworms, beetles, and other invertebrates it depends on. Heavy tillage, drainage, and clearing strip away that ground layer. That’s what’s most likely to push the shrew out of a given patch, even where the surrounding landscape still counts as grassland, farmland, or woodland on a map.
