Ears, tail, and forked antlers: mule deer vs. whitetail
A mule deer’s ears give it away before anything else does. They’re huge, set high and wide on the head, and swivel independently to catch sound from every direction. A white-tailed deer has smaller ears and a broad brown tail that flashes white and flags upward when it runs. A mule deer’s tail stays low. It’s narrow and rope-like, cream or white, and tipped in black. The antlers settle any doubt that’s left. A mule deer buck grows a rack that forks again and again into matched Y shapes, while a whitetail’s tines all rise off a single main beam. Coat color runs gray-brown through most of the year, with a white throat patch and a darker forehead. Its coastal cousin, often called the black-tailed deer, carries the same field marks up the fog-belt forests from northern California into southeast Alaska.

The stotting bound
When the field marks don’t settle it, watch how the deer leaves. Alarmed, a mule deer breaks into stotting, a stiff-legged bound where all four hooves push off and land together, so the whole animal bounces like it’s on springs. A whitetail flees differently, low and flat, tail flagged high, in a smooth gallop. Stotting looks wasteful on open ground, and it is. But across sagebrush, boulders, and deadfall, it lets a mule deer clear obstacles it can’t see over. The bouncing gait also keeps its head high enough to watch the threat behind it. That rocking-horse departure is one of the West’s signature sights, and it works as an ID mark even at a distance.
A deer of the whole West
Mule deer live across nearly every dry, broken landscape the western United States has to offer. They work desert washes lined with mesquite, sagebrush steppe, pinyon-juniper mesas, oak chaparral, and open conifer forest, and by midsummer some climb into alpine meadow above treeline. Records cluster most heavily in California, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon, tracing a range that runs from the fog-wrapped Pacific coast to the dry interior basins east of the Rockies. Sightings span nearly the full range of elevation the West has to offer, from tidewater flats to summer range well above 10,000 feet. That spread is why the species turns up in so many different settings rather than one signature habitat. What ties it together isn’t a single biome. It’s a mix of brushy cover and open feeding ground within easy reach of each other.

Browsers on the move
A mule deer is a browser, not a grazer. It favors the tender parts of shrubs, twigs, buds, and leaves, rounds that out with broad-leaved plants, and takes acorns and berries when they’re in season. Roughly nine-tenths of what it eats is leafy browse, with seeds and mast making up the rest. That appetite for fresh growth drives one of the species’ most striking habits: elevation migration. Many herds winter at lower elevation, then climb steadily through spring, riding the wave of new plant growth as it moves up the mountainside, before dropping back down ahead of the first heavy snow. Wyoming’s Red Desert herd makes one of the longest documented land migrations of any mammal in the Lower 48. Because the routes are learned and passed down rather than instinctive, roads, fences, and new development that cut across them hit mule deer especially hard.
Rut, antlers, and spotted fawns
The mule deer year turns on a late-fall rut. Bucks that fed apart all summer grow restless in November and December, sparring for the right to tend groups of does. Gestation lasts a little under seven months, and fawns arrive in late spring. A doe in good condition usually has twins, while a young doe breeding for the first time often has just one. Newborns wear a scatter of white spots and carry almost no scent. For their first weeks they lie hidden in cover while the mother feeds nearby and returns several times a day to nurse. A buck’s antlers run their own calendar. They grow through spring and summer under a layer of blood-rich velvet, harden and shed that velvet by late summer, carry through the rut, then drop in winter so the cycle can start again.

Predators, pressure, and the population question
The mountain lion is the mule deer’s main predator across most of the West, and lion numbers tend to track deer numbers up and down. Coyotes take a heavy share of fawns, gray wolves hunt adults where the two overlap, and bobcats, black bears, and golden eagles account for the rest. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern, and mule deer remain broadly distributed across the West. Even so, many western herds have thinned over the past few decades, and the causes are stubborn rather than dramatic. Winter range is being lost to development, migration routes are cut by highways and fences, and drought weakens does and shrinks the fawn crop. Wildfire and advancing conifer forest erase the open brush deer need to eat. Add competition with elk and expanding whitetail populations, plus the slow spread of chronic wasting disease in some herds, and the pattern reads as a slow, regional decline rather than one single cause. Mule deer are managed as a game animal in every western state, so wildlife agencies have tracked their numbers for decades. That’s exactly why this uneven, herd-by-herd decline shows up so clearly in the record.
