Oklahoma’s occurrence databases hold 158 records for the wild boar, with reports clustering most heavily around Ouachita National Forest. That pattern shows where people have documented the species, not how many wild boar are actually out there.

Dense eastern cover suits a rooting, wallowing animal

The oak-hickory and pine-oak forest of the Ouachita and Ozark highlands gives this animal thick cover, acorn mast, and damp bottomland to wallow in, conditions that suit its habits better than the more open prairie of western Oklahoma. It roots up soil with its snout for roots, acorns, and invertebrates, and wallows in mud to cool off and coat its skin against biting insects. Records also turn up around the granite country of Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and the Cross Timbers near Lake Thunderbird State Park, showing the species hasn’t stayed confined to its eastern-forest stronghold.

A fast breeder that keeps spreading

Wild boar in the American South trace back to a mix of escaped domestic pigs and released Old World stock, and they reproduce faster than almost any other Oklahoma mammal, which helps explain why the species keeps turning up in new counties. Records peak in Apr–May, the state’s main litter season.

Status in Oklahoma

Oklahoma classifies the wild boar as introduced rather than native to its mapped range here, reflecting its status as a feral, non-native animal.
