The rodent that engineers its own wetland
A beaver doesn’t adapt to its habitat so much as build it. A pair dams the flow by dragging cut branches into a channel and packing them with mud and stones. They build until the water behind the dam hides the underwater doorways of their lodge and floats a winter larder of branches. That single habit ripples outward. The impounded water spreads across the floodplain, lifts the local water table, and slows storm surges. It drops its sediment and recharges groundwater, keeping a stream running later into a dry summer. The new pond edge fills with willow and sedge. Frogs, fish, waterfowl, and wading birds arrive to use water that didn’t exist a season earlier. It’s the textbook example of a keystone species. Pull the beavers out and the wetland drains away; put them back and it fills in again.
Not every colony builds a dam. Along deep rivers and lakeshores where the water already runs high, beavers skip the dam and dig bank burrows instead. Where they do build, the scale can be startling. The longest beaver dam on record was spotted from satellite imagery in northern Alberta. It runs roughly 2,800 feet, more than half a mile of piled sticks and mud maintained by one family across generations.

Telling a beaver from a muskrat or an otter
Up close a beaver is unmistakable, but at a distance a wet brown head crossing a pond invites confusion. The surest mark is the tail. A beaver’s is broad, flat, and scaly, shaped like a leather paddle. It works as a rudder, a prop for balance while the animal gnaws, and a fat store for winter. It’s also an alarm bell: slapped hard against the surface, it cracks like a gunshot and sends the whole colony diving. That paddle only shows clearly out of the water, so anyone watching a swimmer reads posture instead. A beaver rides high and blunt-headed, shoving a wide wake ahead of it. A muskrat, about a third its size, trails a thin, rope-like tail flattened from side to side. A North American river otter is longer, sleeker, and lower in the water, with a thick furred tail that tapers to a point.
The mouth is the other giveaway. A beaver’s four front teeth grow throughout its life and carry iron-rich enamel that leaves them bright orange and hard enough to shear through hardwood. Lips that close behind those incisors let it gnaw and carry sticks underwater without swallowing a mouthful of pond. Adults run about 3 feet from nose to tail tip. Most weigh 35 to 70 pounds, and because they never quite stop growing, the biggest, oldest animals in the cold north can push 90.
Where beavers live, from Alaska to the Gulf
Beavers occupy fresh water across nearly the whole United States, with records in 49 states. As a resident they’re missing only from Hawaii and the driest desert basins far from permanent water. Sightings pile up wherever people and beaver-friendly water overlap most. They’re thickest through the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, and the well-watered parts of Texas, and thinnest across the arid Southwest and the open Great Plains. The beaver is a creature of the waterline: most records sit near sea level and in low river valleys, though beavers follow suitable streams high into the Rockies, well above 6,500 feet. Reports climb sharply in spring. Ice pulls back from northern ponds, two-year-olds strike out to found new colonies, and the fresh dams and pale gnawed stumps of a reoccupied creek are easy to spot.
What a beaver needs is short: water deep and permanent enough to reach a den from below all year, and woody plants close to the bank. Give it those two things and it engineers the rest. That’s why the same species thrives in an Alaskan boreal creek, a Louisiana bayou, and a concrete-lined suburban drain.
A tree-felling vegetarian that never eats fish
For all the felled timber, the beaver is a strict vegetarian. It lives on the tissue of woody plants: the bark and the soft cambium just beneath it, plus twigs, buds, and roots. Aquatic vegetation rounds out the summer diet. Aspen, willow, and cottonwood are the favourites across most of the range, with birch, alder, and maple taken where they grow. A gut full of specialized microbes lets the beaver break down cellulose that would pass straight through most mammals. In autumn a colony jams a raft of cut branches into the mud beside the lodge, an underwater pantry it can reach beneath the ice all winter. Despite living in water and often sharing it with trout, beavers never eat fish.
The felling leaves one of the most recognizable signs in North American natural history. A beaver gnaws around a trunk in a deepening band until the tree topples. The stump it leaves, pointed and chisel-marked, looks like a giant sharpened pencil. A family works a few hundred yards of bank this way. The opened canopy lets sun-loving willows resprout, the very plants the beavers most want to eat.

Lodges, kits, and the tail-slap alarm
Beavers live in tight family colonies built around a single pair that usually mates for life. A colony is normally that pair, the kits born the previous spring, and yearlings from the year before, all sharing one lodge or bank den. Litters of about four arrive in late spring after a gestation of roughly four months. The kits come into the world furred and eyes-open, able to swim within a day or two, though they stay close to the lodge and nurse for two to three months. They remain with their parents for around two years before dispersing to claim mates and water of their own.
Families defend their stretch of pond against other beavers. They patrol the boundary and raise scent mounds of dredged mud daubed with castoreum, a musky secretion from glands near the tail. Actual beaver vocabulary is sparse, a few whines and hisses inside the lodge. Most of the message traffic runs on scent and on that tail-slap, the surest sign that a beaver has noticed a visitor first. The pond doubles as a fortress. On land a beaver is slow, and coyotes, gray wolves, bobcats, mountain lions, bears, and, across the Southeast, American alligators all hunt it heavily. In deep water the tables turn; a beaver can hold its breath for as long as fifteen minutes and is nearly untouchable there. Wild beavers commonly live to about ten and can reach their early twenties.
From fur-trade collapse to restoration tool
The beaver’s dense, waterproof underfur made it one of the most valuable animals in North American history and very nearly its undoing. Two centuries of trapping for the felt-hat trade did the damage. A population once estimated in the hundreds of millions fell toward perhaps a hundred thousand animals by 1900, gone from whole river systems. Protective laws, the collapse of the beaver-felt hat fashion, and decades of live reintroductions reversed the slide. The continent now holds somewhere between 10 and 15 million beavers. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern.
The modern tension is less about scarcity than friction. Beaver ponds flood roads, plug culverts, and swamp low fields. Where that happens, managers answer with flow-control pipes through the dam, relocation, or regulated trapping. Yet the same flooding that frustrates a landowner is now prized by restoration ecologists. Agencies across the arid West now move beavers into degraded, down-cut streams, or mimic their dams with hand-built structures. The goal is to rewet meadows, bank water against drought, and slow the spread of wildfire. An animal the fur trade almost wiped out has become one of the cheapest tools going for repairing a broken watershed.
