A black mask on a tiny, tan-and-black bat
A black muzzle and ears frame a wash of pale, straw-yellow fur, and the wings and tail membrane run almost black. That contrast is the fastest way to know this species in a good photo. Look next at the feet: they’re strikingly small even next to other Myotis bats, which is where the common name comes from. The body itself is tiny, among the smallest bats in the West, and the flight looks light and fluttery rather than fast and direct.
It’s easy to mix up with the little brown bat, a common lookalike across parts of its range. The little brown bat has a plainer, more uniformly brown face with none of this species’ sharp black mask, and it tends to favor buildings and water more than dry rock. Cave myotis, a bulkier bat of the Southwest, also lacks that same contrast, with duller, more even-toned fur.

Rock country across the interior West
This bat belongs to dry, broken ground: cliffs, canyon walls, talus slopes, and badlands scattered across the interior West. Records cluster most heavily in Colorado and New Mexico, with more scattered reports from California, Nebraska, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Nevada, and South Dakota. That spread tracks rock, not state lines. Wherever cliffs and eroded terrain break up the landscape, the species tends to follow.
It roosts by day in tight spaces most bats can’t use: narrow fractures in canyon walls, cracks in rimrock, gaps under bridges, old mine tunnels, and the seams of weathered buildings. Elevation isn’t much of a barrier either. Georeferenced records run from low desert basins up into cool, high mountain country, so this small bat handles a wide swing in climate for its size.
This isn’t a bat that gathers in the huge colonies people picture when they think of caves full of bats. Most individuals roost alone or in a handful together, so a stretch of good rock habitat can hold plenty of bats while showing almost no obvious sign of them.
A cold-hardy hunter of open, rocky ground
Once the sun goes down, the western small-footed myotis leaves its crevice to hunt. It flies low and slow along canyon walls, over open ground, and near water where insects gather, picking off beetles and other small prey on the wing. Its short echolocation calls suit that cluttered, close-quarters hunting style better than the long-range calls of bats built for open sky.
Cold doesn’t shut this species down the way it does some other bats. It drops into torpor on cool nights to save energy, then rouses to feed again once conditions warm up. That flexibility helps it survive in dry, temperature-swinging country where insects can disappear for days at a time.

Small colonies and a quiet winter
Females gather in small maternity groups, sometimes just a handful of bats sharing one roost, and some pregnant females go it alone entirely. That’s a different strategy from Myotis species that pack hundreds into a single site. A typical pregnancy lasts one to two months, and most females raise a single pup each year.
Winter is just as low-key. This bat hibernates in caves, mines, and rock crevices, usually in small numbers and often tucked into narrow spaces that survey teams can miss. That habit makes it easy to undercount, and the species is likely more common across its range than winter surveys alone would suggest.
Telling it apart from other small myotis
California myotis is the closest match in size and range, but its fur reads more evenly gray-brown, without the sharp black-on-tan contrast. Long-legged myotis is bigger, longer-winged, and darker overall, losing that pale-body, dark-face look. Fringed myotis is larger still and carries a fringe of stiff hairs along the tail membrane, visible in a close photo.
None of these differences hold up well at dusk, in flight, from a distance. A clear photo showing the face, ears, and body color beats a guess every time.
Widespread, but easy to overlook
The IUCN lists the western small-footed myotis as Least Concern, and its broad range across the West backs that up. Still, a healthy range-wide status doesn’t guarantee every roost is safe. This bat depends on small, specific spaces, cracks in rock, gaps in old buildings, forgotten mine openings, and those disappear fast when a site gets sealed, renovated, or disturbed.
White-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has devastated cave-hibernating bats across North America, adds another layer of risk as it continues to spread west. For a species this small and this easy to miss, protecting the quiet crevices it depends on may matter more than any broader label.
