A familiar bat in a sudden crisis
The little brown myotis was once among the most frequently recorded bats in North America. It was the bat behind a barn’s loose siding, the one working a porch light for moths. Every field guide used it as a familiar baseline.
That changed fast. In the winter of 2006, cavers near Albany, New York found a cave floor littered with dead bats. Their muzzles were dusted with a fungus nobody had seen before. Myotis lucifugus has been the hardest-hit species in that outbreak ever since. It’s still recorded across 28 states, from Alaska to Virginia, but the IUCN now rates it Endangered because so many of its biggest hibernating colonies are gone.
How to know a little brown myotis
This is a small, plain brown bat with a smooth face and no leaf-shaped nose flap. That sounds unhelpful until you notice that blank face is itself the clue. Its fur has a glossy sheen that several duller relatives lack, and its short, rounded ears barely reach the nose tip when folded forward. The name Myotis lucifugus roughly means “light-fleeing mouse-ear,” a fitting label for a bat that hides in total darkness until well after sunset.

Mixing it up with a similar bat is common among western Myotis species. The western small-footed myotis wears a sharp black mask across pale buff fur, a look this bat never shows. The Yuma myotis looks duller and flatter-headed and sticks closer to open water. The California myotis runs noticeably smaller, with a darker, masked face. The cave myotis, a bigger relative, favors large limestone caves and gathers in much bigger colonies. None of these differences are easy to catch on a bat flickering past at dusk. Biologists doing careful counts still measure bats in the hand instead.
Roosts from caves to attics
Little brown myotis are colonial, gathering anywhere from a handful of bats to several thousand wherever they find warmth, darkness, and shelter. Caves, rock crevices, and hollow trees are the natural choices. This bat has also adapted to buildings as well as any species in North America. Barns, church attics, bridge joints, and the gap behind house siding all work fine. Nursery colonies fill with pregnant females each spring, since extra warmth speeds up a roughly two-month pregnancy. That head start helps a single pup reach flying size before fall.

Alaska now holds the largest number of recorded little brown myotis anywhere, alongside strong records in New York, Colorado, and the Pacific Northwest. Most sightings cluster near sea level, though the species turns up above 8,900 feet in a few western states. Wetlands and rivers read as a stronghold even in otherwise dry country, since that’s where insects concentrate over open water.
A relentless insect hunter
A little brown myotis finds dinner by sound, not sight. It sends out rapid, high-pitched calls and reads the echoes to build a moving picture of the dark ahead. The system is precise enough to snatch a tumbling moth from the air. Its diet is almost entirely insects, mostly moths, mosquitoes, and midges, and one bat can eat thousands of prey items in a single night. Much of that hunting happens low over ponds and slow rivers, where flying insects concentrate. That appetite makes this small bat a genuine, easy-to-overlook check on insect numbers around farms, campgrounds, and backyards.
One pup a year, raised in a crowded nursery
Litters are always a single pup, so a colony’s growth depends on how many adults survive winter, not on how many young they raise. Mothers gather in warm nursery roosts to give birth and nurse together, sometimes hundreds of related females sharing the same attic year after year. A pup grows fast, reaching flying weight within a few weeks. That lets it hunt on its own before the first cold snap. Most bats reach breeding age within about seven months.
Awake through summer, buried in winter
Come fall, little brown myotis leave their summer roosts for caves and old mines that hold a narrow band of stable, cold air. Their bodies slow to a crawl. Heart rate and metabolism drop far below summer levels, body temperature falls close to that of the surrounding rock, and a bat can go weeks without stirring. That extreme torpor pays off. Where most mammals this size live two or three years, a little brown myotis can reach 34 years in the wild, one of the biggest gaps between body size and lifespan of any mammal. The same deep sleep that buys such a long life leaves a hibernating bat almost defenseless against disturbance, and, as it turned out, against disease.
White-nose syndrome and the road ahead
White-nose syndrome is a cold-loving fungus that grows on the skin of hibernating bats. It wakes them far more often than their fat reserves can cover. Each unplanned arousal burns energy meant to last the whole winter, so an infected bat can starve inside the very cave that once kept it safe. Since that first New York cave, the fungus has spread across most of the eastern and central United States. It had reached Washington state by 2016. It still hasn’t turned up in Alaska, the state with the most recorded little brown myotis today. Some eastern hibernation sites that once held hundreds of thousands of bats now hold only a few hundred.

The species moved from one of the safest conservation categories to globally Endangered within about a decade, a collapse fast enough that biologists still treat it as the reference case for what a wildlife disease can do to a once-common species. Western colonies, especially in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, haven’t been hit nearly as hard yet, which is exactly why conservation groups are watching them so closely now.
